Nǐ Hǎo
I am fundraising by asking everyone for their support with a project I’ have become involved with and is very important to me. I have recently been accepted as a teacher for WorldTeach, a non-profit organization that places English native speaking folks in schools into developing countries. In just over six months, I will be traveling to Shenzhen, China to teach in a public school which do not have enough teachers.
The problem is that there are too many Chinese students per teachers. Hong Kong has about 55 students and in the mainland they have over 70 in their classrooms. The most efficient way to organize all these children is by testing, categorizing and grading them – Chinese education is essentially elitist. Students that excel in school are rewarded with prizes and encouragement, but struggling students are abandoned.
Teaching English Secondary Language ESL in China
In 2013, a record high 20 million students took these tests. All three years of high school are devoted to the exams, and teachers refer to them continually with 20% of their test are required to be in English. This year I have met a amazing family from Shenzhen, China whom inspired me to do just that. Teach English to Chinese students, just North of Hong Kong. The students will be 8-12 year olds with some knowledge of the English vocabulary. My goal is to make it fun for them; knowing that I’ve made an impact by inspiring young minds.
During my stay I will receive a small living allowance from my school, enough to cover basic expenses while I serve as a teacher for the year. However, getting there won’t be easy, since the cost of volunteering on an international scale is significant. The cost of my placement, training, air travel, insurance and field support for the year is almost $6,000. I am trying to raise half of the volunteer commitment through extra work hours, grants, and several fundraising events, but I also need your help.
